Does any one remember going dancing on Sunday afternoon/evening at Suters in Slough High Street in 1960/61? Also dancing at the Adelphi ballroom where I learnt the Twist! My friend and I also used to travel on the 457(?) bus to Uxbridge to a dance above Burtons. Often Brian Poole and the Tremeloes would be playing there, it was a great venue.

As Mr. Smith said, Sunday afternoon dancing was at the Carlton Ballroom. I used to work at weekends at BUCKS MUSIC STORE at the end of Slough and the owners used to loan 45s to the Carlton to play at the dances. I was given the job of choosing the records. Generally the manager of the dance hall would thank me during the session and I was given the right to choose a tune for us to dance too. I always chose a Roy Orbison song. I also remember going to the Carlton to see The Rolling Stones before they were famous. I also remember going to the Adelphi. I have written about Slough and these 'palaces' on my website, stories-of-london.org under the Granada Theatre Circuit series. I was lucky enough to be allowed to see the Adelphi Ballroom as it is today a couple of years ago. I was amazed at it size: like most things revisited, the ballroom was quite small as was the rostrum for the band. It was now used for meetings for Gala Bingo employees. It was pleasantly decorated, as can be seen on my website. It is amazing that the Adelphi of the three cinemas in Slough Centre should have survived when the more glorious Granada and Century should have been lost. I was told that this happened because of the number of dressing rooms available. Somewhere on this site here, I have written about the Teddy Boys that used to congregate at Slough Crown Corner.
I visit Slough only to go to my parents' grave nowadays and since I no longer live in the U.K., these visits are rare. However, each time I walk along the High Street and over the bridge to Stoke Road, I am amazed at how they have ruined this town. The theatre that replaced the Carlton and a series of shops is gone - first replaced by a multiplex that led to the demolition of the Granada and now this has gone. I think that Slough would have been better had the Carlton been kept - at least it was somewhere to go when you were young.
